Scrapping a car – the guide!

When it is time to part with your old car, many questions arise. Where can the car be scrapped? What is the procedure? And how much will it cost me? There are basically different ways to have a car scrapped. Did you know that every dealer is obliged to take back goods purchased from him? Since January 1, 2007, this also applies to automobiles and commercial vehicles (see definition below). The following applies: dealers and importers must take back end-of-life vehicles of their brand free of charge in accordance with §3 of the End-of-Life Vehicle Ordinance – and this applies to vehicles in the following classes:

Class M1: Vehicles for passenger transport with a maximum of eight seats in addition to the driver’s seat.

Class N1: Motor vehicles that transport goods and do not exceed a total permissible mass of up to 3.5 tons.

Often manufacturers or dealers cooperate with disposal companies to which the vehicle can be taken directly.

2nd option: Scrapping at the recycling company

The second and far more frequently chosen option for the disposal of a scrap car is at a recycling company. These are therefore specialists whose daily business is the disposal of vehicles. These companies often offer a very good service and even collect the vehicle from the customer’s home free of charge. Nor is anything often charged for the disposal itself – i.e. the recycling of the end-of-life vehicle – as this provides valuable raw materials with which the disposal company can in turn earn money.

In the case of vehicles that are still in pretty good shape or correspond to a model that is running well, some disposal companies even pay the customer money for picking up the scrap car. An example of this can be found at schrottautos-ankauf.de.

It is important to make sure that the selected disposal company is a certified company or a similar collection point. Only then is disposal in accordance with the prescribed environmental standards guaranteed. By the way, the disposal company will take care of all formalities such as deregistration of the car and the certificate of destruction to be provided.

Why do I have to dispose of my car professionally?

Simply leaving the old car on the side of the road – that can be very expensive. And the last owner can usually be determined very quickly and easily via the chassis number and other characteristics. But why are such penalties imposed for this?

Because an old car not only contains valuable raw materials such as sheet metal, glass, etc., but also pollutants that endanger our environment – e.g. used oil, brake fluid, coolant, etc. Therefore, it is very important to have the car disposed of in an environmentally friendly way by a professional and certified company.

Attention: If the car is no longer registered or does not have a license plate, it must not be stored in public parking lots or on traffic routes. So it is best to call the recycler right away and make an appointment, otherwise you can expect a fine of $150.
